Marshalling !!!

I feel strongly about this so I'm posting this thread to air my opinion.

It is quite apparent from most drivers that when they are on the rostrum and their car is involved in a collision which renders it imobile that it is expected that a race marshal should run over to it as quickly as possible to right the situation.

Some of those drivers however are quite happy to marshal whilst chatting away to other marshals and not really caring what is happening right under their noses.

It can be frustrating.

Marshalling should be as important as racing and all of the drivers should treat it as such.

Its not quite as clean cut a question as that ,,,, Who would decide if a marshal had done all they could or not ? & with people using stand in marshals when they are fixing there cars etc ......

There are copies of the guidelines to marshaling at the club but here are some of the main points:-

Generally, you will marshal the race following yours. Go to the marshal point that corresponds with your car number. Please note that to be able to race and marshal you have to have BRCA membership. Please see a club official at Race Control if in doubt.

•When marshalling, observe the section of track in front of you. Do not watch the racing. Only go onto the racing surface when it is safe to do so, do not walk out in front of oncoming cars. Do not run.  Be careful when picking up overturned cars, they may be hot and have spinning wheels. Drivers of cars that have stopped should not rev they motor when being marshalled.

If the car you have marshalled is mobile then place it back on the side of the track where it left the circuit and pointing in the direction of racing. Do not place it in front of oncoming cars! If the car will not run then remove it to the side of the track, place it on its side and if possible switch it off or unplug the battery. Continue to marshal your section of track.

•Stay at your marshalling point until the last car has finished, you may be requested to marshal the following race but otherwise return to collect your car from scrutineering and prepare for your next race.

How many people actually read the rules
I think we have all been guilty at some time of missing a car in trouble but Robert is right in that standards have dropped recently. I lost 10 seconds on the buggy track waiting to be marshalled on Sunday.

The biggest problem is getting people out in the first place, you are all drivers so you shoud be out there straight after your race or when called. We have in the past applied penalties (losing fastest time) for those who fail to marshall but when you are actually marshaling please observe the rules.

We all want to have fun and with some drivers doing more than one class it is sometimes a struggle to get out and repair etc but when you are on the track you should observe the above guidelines.

To be totally honest I have to agree, and as one who is sometimes guilty of the aforementioned sin    I promise to to try and do better in future as I hope everyone else will

All very true and maybe a timely reminder to us all about marshalling standards.
Work on the simple basis that you always marshall other cars as you would want others to marshall yours.
