Caravan Meeting

Right guys & gals some simple basic rules.

The Caravan must be constructed in such away that it will not damage - the track, other cars, marshalls.

There must be no sharp edges.

So no full metal versions

There will be an award for the best caravan, plus one for the caravan that is the best at the end of the meeting ( it must be the one you use in each race!)

To qualfy for the prizes you must use your caravan in every race.

Other rules will brought in as needed
MadMini

How about metal framed versions, nothing meaty though

Are they allowed to be strapped to any type of vehicle?
CuttingEdge

The Caravans were ment to be in the mini class But I can't see a problem with a Touring car with a Hand out motor in Entering as well       Can you Barry ?

Then Barry and Greeno and Ian can also enter

I was thinking along the lines of my truck, its about the same speed as a mini on the touring car track. would look excellent with a caravan towing along behind it. could even take it onto the grass

Metal framed was not in the intention of the fun idea.

and yes they can be strapped to any vehicle
Jimbo

What is the date for this caravan racing? Might have to see if i can knock something together myself.
CuttingEdge

Jim its on the December FUN Meet .............

Post your Caravan Pics Below

Mine is under way pic to follow soon

1.5 deg toe in & Gold springs with 5mm ride hight at the Axel point , so far ....

Worried about the weight though its getting heavy , I think the Touring car may be needed to pull it along ......................
Jimbo

Sounds good to me!

Ive got a few ideas that could make it work well

This sounds like the one we will all be aiming for - toe-in, suspension, ride height, weight - very sophisticated and maybe way too fragile!!!!!
Roll on the fun and frolics.
CuttingEdge

UMMMMMMMMMM don't like the sound of the one we will be aiming for

Starting to look good though    Seems like every one is keeping there designs under cover TOP SECRET  maybe ...............

Come on show us your Vans
El Capitano

As they say down the docks Trev, I'll show you mine if you show me yours!!
CuttingEdge

ummm so you have started the build then Captain ? I am half way there or there abouts
greyfox

OK, mine has just been started with a 2mm fibreglass chassis (if you can call it that!), Mardave beam axle and will have a nice caravan-like body made from Kelloggs cornflake boxes (designed to absorb impact - well maybe one impact!) attached by bits of wood to the chassis
Attachment to the car currently undecided but most likely by way of string and sellotape.
CuttingEdge

Having got the Basic Van built I think it will need to TC to tow it can't see the mini pulling this Baby

First coat of paint on and drying as i type , hopfuly the windows can be installed this evening
CuttingEdge

Ok Ill be the first to post a Work in progress picture

First coat of paint on , some windows installed , running gear installed

admin

Very nice Trev,
mine when/if i get round to it will be more like Ians'
CuttingEdge

I am going for the best condition at the end of the day
CuttingEdge

Updated Now 3 hours into the Build ( Nearly there just need the finishing paint Job and i think that will do )

Not Quite to scale BUT the Mini would not have pulled this baby      Bit on the heavy side

Where are all the other Projects then I Can't Race by my self !!!!!!! Its 3 hours work in the van above and made from anything i can find in the Garage / Kitchen  !!!!!!!!!!  Not cost a penny !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TeamHearne

Think yours might put my design to shame. I was thinking along the lines of an ice cream container & linda suggested cotton reels for wheels. Just as soon as I can see a little better i'll make a start mind you I can start now by eating the Ice cream

MadMini

by the sound of yours trev i think i better get going with mine ,are we allowed to use plastic as the chasis  and small metal bolts
.
greyfox

No problem with plastic chassis and bolts - I'm going for fibreglass chassis with some bolts. Might not now be cornflake box for the superstructure but something else (sorry don't know what it's called)
Under Trev's is a little metal chassis to hold the wheels on and then MDF for the floorpan and walls. It's substantial so have decided not to attack it now!!!!
No. 46

Is an aluminium floorpan and axle ok, hope so as ive made it, it wont be exposed though as its going to have a lexan shell and will be as safe if not safer than mdf, plywood etc. I will put a photo up tomorrow when a few more bits are made

Yep that's OK
CuttingEdge

Finaly decided on my Colours for my Van

Fans of TopGear will recognize my Elddis Shamal XL Nearly Finished just need to work out how to connect it to the car ( I have a few idears )
No. 46

Love the curtains trev

Mines well on the way, just needs some finishing touches

Got a nice method of fitting the caravan to the car but i haven't got the bits for it yet
greyfox

Right, the chassis is now complete (half an hour work from start to finish) with the Mardave front axle bolted on (thanks Les for the 'loan' of that). Sides are cut out (thanks Trev for the plastic sheet stuff).
Now working out how to glue the plastic to the wooden ply chassis, but most likely Araldite will do it.
I'll report back later, after the stiffeners on the chassis (well it is thin ply and it bends like crazy!) have dried as it is in the vice at the moment making sure they stick OK.
greyfox

OK, stiffeners seemed to have dried, so have just araldited three of the four sides on, so will let that dry for a couple of hours now.
Cut one of the sides slightly wrong, but hey-ho it's a caravan for a caravan race!!
greyfox

Have just spent an hour building and painting the interior of my caravan - but as some of you know it isn't a caravan but a burger van!!
Even has a working feature on it as well (besides the wheels that go around!!).
If I can work out how to post pictures on here, I'll get some on here soon.
benh

I am really looking forward to this.
